Finite Differences on t he Sphere

چکیده

Even before any numerical considerations are confronted, we run into difficulties simply in specifying a coordinate system. It is important to distinguish between true scalarvalued and vector-valued functions. The value of a scalar function, say temperature, is independent of coordinate system. That is, the temperature at some point in space is the same regardless of how we define the position of the point. On the other hand, the individual components of a vector-valued function, such as the wind velocity, obviously differ depending on the coordinate system. In a spherical coordinate system, the lines of constant longitude converge at the poles, so longitude is multivalued at the poles. This means that the components of the wind vector are discontinuous at the poles, although the wind vector itself is perfectly well behaved at the pole.

Unsteady Free Convection from a Sphere in a Porous Medium with Variable Surface Temperature

In this paper a transient free convection flow around a sphere with variable surface temperature and embedded in a porous medium has been considered. The temperature of the sphere is suddenly raised and subsequently maintained at values that varies with position on surface. The method of asymptotic expansions is applied for small Rayleigh numbers and then a finite-difference scheme is used to s...

Spherical Designs and Polynomial Approximation on the Sphere

This talk presents some joint work with An, Frommer, Lang, Sloan and Womersley on spherical designs and polynomial approximation on the sphere [1],[2],[4],[5]. Finding “good” finite sets of points on the unit sphere S in the Euclidean space R has been a hot research topic in mathematics, physics, and engineering for more than hundred years. There are several concepts of “good” finite sets of po...

Possibility of the effect of the Internet on 'Public Sphere' in Jurgen Habermas's Tthought?"

In recent decades, "Public Sphere" is one of the most important concepts in political science. Jurgen Habermas the famous thinker in this approach is the first to use this concept in critical thinking, where he demonstrates how networking is used for communicative actions. Habermas has not included the Internet as an important part of his thought process in the "public sphere", however, I think...

Three Dimensional Analysis of Flow Past a Solid-Sphere at Low Reynolds Numbers with the Aid of Body Fitted Coordinates

In this paper, the flow-field of an incompressible viscous flow past a solid-sphere at low Reynolds numbers (up to 270) is investigated numerically. In order to extend the capabilities of the finite volume method, the boundary (body) fitted coordinates (BFC) method is used. Transformation of the partial differential equations to algebraic relations is based on the finite-volume method with coll...
